At balletLORENT, we are deeply committed to offering high-quality dance experiences to as wide a range of people as possible. This sits at the heart of everything we do — creating diverse, inclusive work for all ages and designing learning and participation programmes that complement our productions.
Our bespoke schools workshops are often themed around our fairytale performance work and are carefully tailored to suit any age group, aligning with curriculum goals where appropriate. Delivered by our professional dance artists, these sessions give children the opportunity to explore movement in imaginative and expressive ways.
This term, we’ve delivered weekly sessions directly in two local schools we’ve had the pleasure of working with for over a decade: Westgate Hill in West Newcastle and South Gosforth First School. More than 120 children have taken part in a six-week programme inspired by the themes and characters of Snow White. Debbi Purtill, Creative Partner at balletLORENT, reflected on the experience:
“The imagination and openness children bring into the room is always incredible. Their willingness to take creative risks and tell stories through their bodies is what makes these workshops so special.”
These sessions are about far more than dance — they are spaces where children develop confidence, build teamwork skills, and express themselves in new ways.
“These workshops help build confidence, teamwork, and self-expression,” said James, balletLORENT’s Education Manager. “It’s been amazing to see how much the children grow — not just as dancers, but as individuals.”
The weekly sessions have also been an opportunity to spot young talent. Ten children from each school have been invited to attend a taster session at our balletLORENT Youth Academy this September, where they can further develop their skills and creativity in a supportive, professional environment.
By bringing our work into schools, we aim to nurture creativity, inspire confidence, and build meaningful pathways for young people to continue engaging with dance and storytelling.
