Ten young stars from Heathfield Primary School in Darlington are about to step into the spotlight, joining the professional cast of balletLORENT’s spellbinding reimagining of Snow White at Darlington Hippodrome this May.
The children, aged just six to eight and all from Years 2 and 3, will perform alongside experienced dancers in two live performances of the beloved fairytale on Friday 16 and Saturday 17 May 2025. It’s a unique opportunity that blends the magic of storytelling with the thrill of live theatre—and for many of the pupils, it’s their first time performing on a professional stage.
Their journey began with a school workshop led by balletLORENT dancers Debbi Purtill and John Kendall, where dozens of pupils explored movement, expression, and creativity. From that group, ten were chosen for their enthusiasm, energy, and stage presence.
Class teacher Mrs Craggill shared the excitement felt across the school:
"This is a fantastic opportunity for children from our school to be involved in a new skill and perform live to an audience. They are all really excited to be chosen and looking forward to starting rehearsals."
Eight-year-old Divine, one of the young performers, said:
"I really enjoyed the workshop because it inspired me to join a company and take part in a production. I'm a little bit nervous because I’ve only performed in front of people I know—but I’m also really excited!"
The children will appear in two versions of the show. One, suitable for ages 5 and up, is a beautifully staged retelling of the Brothers Grimm tale, full of visual wonder and poetic movement. The second, Snow White: The Sacrifice, is a bold, adult-focused take on the story that delves into the psyche of Snow White’s mother—the Wicked Queen—exploring themes of aging, beauty, and power.
Both versions are narrated by acclaimed actor Lindsay Duncan (The Morning Show) and feature an original score by Doctor Who composer Murray Gold. The production is directed by balletLORENT’s founder, Liv Lorent, and includes a diverse cast of all ages, from six-year-olds to seasoned performers in their sixties—including Caroline Reece as the Queen and Stockton-based dancer Geoff Hopson as the King.
James MacGillivray, balletLORENT’s Education and Projects Manager, said:
"For many children, taking part in a professional stage production is a unique and transformative experience. It builds confidence, creativity, and communication skills—while enriching the arts provision in schools."
Although part of a national tour, each stop of Snow White includes a new local children’s cast, ensuring that more young people around the country experience the joy of performance.
