Hand-knitted dancing dolls have been springing up in surprising spots across Newcastle’s West End this week, delighting local children and passers-by alike.
The charming woollen creations — including rabbits, pigs, bears, footballers and miniature dancers — were lovingly crafted and hidden around the neighbourhood in celebration of International Dance Day, taking place on Tuesday 29 April.
Each unique doll was handmade by Knitters, Movers & Shakers, a warm and welcoming group run by balletLORENT at the John Marley Centre in Scotswood. Fifteen dedicated members, aged between 55 and 87, spent hours crocheting and knitting over 100 tiny dancers, each measuring between 12–20cm. The soft toys have been discreetly placed in local shops, GP surgeries, supermarkets, schools and community spaces throughout Benwell, Scotswood, Denton, Fenham and Elswick.
Every doll took approximately five hours to make, with wool generously donated by supporters of the project. The group has previously contributed handmade items to balletLORENT’s touring productions, including intricate ladybird cushions, oversized carrots, and a garden rug made from over 6,000 crocheted blades of grass for The Velveteen Rabbit.
balletLORENT’s Education and Projects Manager, James MacGillivray, shared the inspiration behind the initiative:
"To celebrate International Dance Day 2025, we’re inviting even more people to discover the joy of moving together – and of creating something beautiful for others. Each doll is a small reminder that someone cares — and a gentle invitation to see what’s happening right on your doorstep with balletLORENT."
In addition to spreading smiles, every doll comes with a special surprise — a voucher for a free trial class at balletLORENT. Options include grown-up ballet, yoga, a parent and toddler dance class, or the Creative Studio for ages 13–19.
If you’re lucky enough to find one of these tiny treasures, don’t forget to snap a photo and tag @balletlorent on Facebook.
