Liv Lorent on the late Ezio Bosso, composer for The Becoming

Wednesday January 11th 2023Share page

In March 2020, the award-winning Italian composer, Ezio Bosso, died aged just 48.

Throughout his incredible career, Ezio collaborated with many great artists and worked with illustrious organisations such as New York City Ballet, Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow and the Vienna State Opera. His composing spanned many forms, including symphonies, film soundtracks, work for theatre, ballet and vocal compositions.

Music by Ezio forms the soundtrack to balletLORENT’s The Becoming, which has its world premiere on January 18 2023 in Newcastle.

Here, Artistic Director Liv Lorent talks about her relationship with Ezio and why his music has been important to her.

"In 2006 I worked with Ezio’s music for a duet called Propeller for the BalletBoyz. It toured internationally for several years and eventually became part of their Greatest Hits tour.

Then, for Scottish Dance Theatre in 2007, I created a group work called  Tenderhook which also travelled widely and Ezio came to Dundee and worked with us there. He made the whole company dinner, and some of us are still recreating his pasta recipe.

Ezio is the first close collaborator I have lost. He died too young. I treasure the amazing music he has left us, but I am sorry for all the years he didn’t get to continue creating. In some ways, The Becoming is a tribute to his genius and a response to life and lives lost and curtailed for many of us these last 2 and a half years.

Has Ezio’s music defined my choices as a choreographer at all?

Well, I like to listen hard to music I love and let the choreography swell out as a visual of what I can hear. Ezio’s music is wonderful to work with."
