Meet John Kendall

I’ve danced with the balletLORENT since 2012 performing and helping to create the company’s trilogy of fairytales; Rapunzel, Snow White and Rumpelstiltskin along with a host of other shows too.

At balletLORENT we pull together as a team from all the hard work going on behind the scenes in the office to the dancers in the studio and the wonderful collaborative partners that help create the music, costumes, set and lighting. We all work closely together pulling in the same direction to bring to life imaginary worlds and narratives on stage.

More recently I’ve also been involved in helping deliver workshops across the country meeting hundreds of super talented children and trying to find a young cast to perform with us on stage in Snow White.

Alongside working with balletLORENT I also work with a few other companies including a theatre company in Austria called Cafe Fuerte. Something I really love about my job is always meeting new people in new places and sharing that joy of creating something special together.

I love working with others to bring stories to life. The best part is meeting new people and making something special together.

John Kendall

What first got you into dancing?

I first started dancing when I was twelve. My brother and a few friends went along to some Breakdancing classes. I didn’t really want to go in all honesty at first but went along to keep my brother company. My teacher was a Scottish breakdancer. I owe it to him for my dance career. He was so encouraging and even though I wasn’t the most natural dancer he made me realise that if you put your mind to something and find enjoyment in moving then anything is possible.

What’s your favourite part of your job?

I love seeing a show come to life. There are so many parts to a show; the choreographer, dancers, set design, costume design, lighting design all of which requires years of planning before it is finally performed on stage. To see or feel that show finally have a life and see the joy that it brings to people watching is really special and something I feel proud to contribute towards!

Where did you train? What advice do you have for someone looking to do dance training?

The advice I’d give is to find that love and joy of movement. Be inquisitive and interested to all styles of dance and walks of life. Inspiration is all around us :) Once you find that dancing and all those hard hours of training becomes totally worthwhile and possibilities and options begin to open.
